What’s with this Administrator stuff?
A few parishioners over the last couple of months have asked about the difference between a parish pastor and a parish administrator and why Cardinal George appointed me to be administrator for our two parishes.
First, pastors and administrators have exactly the same responsibilities for preaching, teaching, pastoral care, leading prayer and celebrating the sacraments. So, the full spiritual life of our two parishes continues as always.
Second, an administrator is delegated to maintain and guide the continuing activities of a parish during the interim between pastors. The administrator, also, has the usual responsibilities for the business operations of the parish but is not authorized to make major changes regarding the budget, personnel, and the principle councils of the parish. All such changes proposed by an administrator, must be reviewed and approved by the Episcopal Vicar-in our case, Bishop Francis Kane.
Third, the reason I asked to be appointed administrator instead of pastor of St. Matthias and Transfiguration parishes is that when Fr. Terry was unexpectedly transferred to Holy Family Parish, our parishes had not had the opportunity to prepare for the change.
In talking with Bishop Kane and Fr. Terry, I suggested that our parishes deserved a transition period during which each can clarify itsneeds and plans and then determine the kind of priest who would be the best fit for each parish. Ordinarily a pastor has a six year tenure which the Archdiocese may renew once for a maximum of 12 years. An administrator is not tenured, so… You’re not stuck with me should I make a complete mess of things.
On the other hand– If I don’t make too big a mess too soon, I’d be delighted to remain a St. Matthias and Transfiguration parishes for as long as I’m needed, either as your administrator, or someday perhaps, your pastor.. There’s absolutely no urgency to make that choice and no real difference to the parishes, except that I have access to a lot of great advice and additional guidance as the administrator, which I really appreciate. I hope this helps to clarify things.

Que es con todo esto de la Administracion?
En los ultimos meses algunos feligreses han preguntado que es la diferencia entre ser pastor y ser el administrador de la parroquia y la razon porque el Cardenal me apunto como administrador de nuestras dos parroquias.
Primero, los pastores y administradores tienen exactamente las mismas responsabilidades de predicar, enseñar, cuidado pastoral, guiarnos en oracion, y celebrar los sacramentos. Entonces, la vida espiritual completa de nuestras dos parroquias continua como siempre.
Segundo, un administrador se delega para mantener y guiar las actividades de la parroquia durante el tiempo provisional mientras hay un nuevo pastor. El administrador tambien tiene las responsabilidades en el area de operaciones de negocio pero no esta autorizado para hacer cambios drasticos que se refieren al presupuesto, personal, y los concejos principales de la parroquia. Todos estos cambios que un administrador propone tienen que ser analizados y aprovados por el Vicar Episcopal - en nuestro caso, el Obispo Francisco Kane.
Tercero, la razon que pedi que me apuntaran a administrador en cambio de pastor de San Matias y Transfiguracion es por lo que cuando transfirieron al Padre Terry de imprevisto a la Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia, nuestras parroquias no tuvieron la oportunidad para preparar para este cambio.
Hablando con el Obispo Kane y el Padre Terry, sugeri que nuestras parroquias se merecian un tiempo de transicion para que cada una de ellas pueda aclarar lo que necesita y lo que quiere planear y asi despues determinar que clase de sacerdote seria el mejor para ambas parroquias. Normalmente un pastor tiene una tenencia de seis años que la Arquidiocesis puede renovar otra vez para un total de 12 años. Un administrador no tiene tenencia, entonces... Si no hago buen trabajo ajuro no tienen que quedarse conmigo.
Por otro lado -- Si hago un buen trabajo, me encantaria seguir aqui en San Matias y Transfiguracion por todo el tiempo necesario, como su administrador, o quizas algun dia como su pastor... No hay urgencia en tomar una decision y no afecta mucho a las parroquias, excepto que tengo acceso a muchos consejos buenos y puedo guiarlos mas como administrador, y realmente valoro eso. Espero que esto ayude a aclarar muchas cosas.
