A Letter from Father Terry

To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,

Please see the list on the cover of today’s bulletin of our children who will be receiving the Sacrament of First Communion. Please keep them in your prayers and know that they are well prepared for this important moment in their faith journey. I want to thank those who have been working closely with them in preparation for their First Communion, namely, their Catechists and teachers. From our CCD program Adelina Vergara, Leah Bertke and Maitha Abogato. Our St. Matthias Transfiguration School second grade teacher is Tammy Plewa. These dedicated teachers have been sharing their faith and the wisdom of the church with these young parishioners and we thank them for their dedication. Many thanks to our Director of Religious Education Karyn McGovern and our Principal Sandria DeSapio for their leadership and generosity. We had a First Communion Mass in English at St. Matthias and two First Communion Masses at Transfiguration in Spanish this Saturday because of the large number of children. May God bless these children and their parents as they continue their journey of faith.

As the Easter Season continues we have several important events coming up. The Feast of the Ascension will be celebrated on Sunday, May 4. That weekend we will also have May Crownings at ALL Masses at BOTH parishes. Children from St. Matthias Transfiguration School and our CCD Program will crown Mary at each Mass including the 5 PM Masses on Saturday, May 3. The big procession and outdoor May Crowning will take place at the 9:30 Mass at Trans and a larger procession will be a part of the 11:30 Mass at St. Matthias. Pentecost will bring the Easter Season to a close on Sunday, May 11 which is also Mothers Day.

Our Annual Global Fest will be on Saturday, May 17 beginning with a festive, multi ethnic Mass at 5 pm at St. Matthias. If you would like to participate in the procession for the Global Fest Mass by carrying a flag and possibly wearing any ethnic costume or outfit, or participate by doing reading, bringing up gifts or any other participation, please call either rectory to let us know. Please consider supporting the Transfiguration Car Raffle by purchasing tickets (only $10 a piece) and or selling some to your friends.

Fr. Americo Dalbello will be returning to Brazil TEMPORARILY. He will be leaving this week and will return to us on July 3. Have a safe trip Fr. Americo.

You will notice the purple signs describing all parish ministries and organizations at Transfiguration— they have been posted on the walls of Church since Lent. Please take the time to read these descriptions, pray about which ones you wish to join and then fill out the following form and place it in the collection basket or return it to the rectory. We will be removing them shortly so please pay special attention to them and sign up for a ministry or two today. Many Thanks.

A La Gente Maravillosa de San Matías y Transfiguración,

Por favor vean la lista de la portada del boletín de nuestros niños que recibirán el Sacramento de la Primera Comunión. Por favor manténganlos en sus oraciones y sepan que están preparados para este momento tan importante en su camino de fe. Quiero darle las gracias a todos que han ayudado a prepararlos para la Primera Comunión, especialmente los Catequistas y los profesores. De nuestro programa de CCD, Adelina Vergara, Leah Bertke, y Maitha Abogato. Nuestra profesora de segundo grado en la Escuela de San Matías Transfiguración es Tammy Plewa. Estos profesores han estado brindado su fe y conocimiento de la iglesia con estos jóvenes feligreses y les agradecemos por su dedicación. Muchas gracias a nuestra Directora de Educación Religiosa, Karyn McGovern y a nuestra Directora de la escuela, Sandria DeSapio por su liderazgo y generosidad. Este sábado tuvimos una Misa de Primera Comunión en ingles en San Matías y dos Misas en español en Transfiguración porque había muchos niños. Que Dios bendiga a estos niños y a sus padres mientras siguen con su camino de fe.

Mientras sigue la Temporada de Pascua tenemos muchos eventos importantes que se avecinan. La Fiesta de Ascensión la celebraremos el domingo, 4 de mayo. Esa semana también tendremos la Coronación de la Virgen en TODAS las Misas en AMBAS parroquias. Los niños de la Escuela de San Matías Transfiguración y los de nuestro Programa de CCD coronaran a la Virgen durante cada Misa incluyendo a las Misas de las 5 PM el sábado, 3 de mayo. La procesión y la coronación será afuera a las 9:30 en Transfiguración y la procesión mas grande será a las 11:30 en San Matías.

El día de Pentecostés cerrara la Temporada de Pascua el domingo, 11 de mayo empezando con una Misa multi-étnica y festiva a las 5 PM en San Matías. Si quieren participar vistiéndose con un disfraz o traje étnico, o leyendo, llevando las ofrendas, o cualquier otra cosa, por favor avísennos en cualquiera de las dos rectorías. Por favor consideren apoyar a Transfiguración con su compra de boletos ($10 cada uno) para la Rifa del carro o vendiéndole boletos a sus amigos.

El Padre Américo regresara al Brasil TEMPORALMENTE. El se ira esta semana y regresa el 3 de julio. Que tenga buen viaje Padre Américo.

En Transfiguración notaran los avisos morados describiendo los ministerios y organizaciones de la parroquia -- están en las paredes de la iglesia desde la Cuaresma. Por favor tomen el tiempo para leerlos, rezar sobre los que les gustaría unirse, llenar el formulario y dejarlo en la colecta o regresarlo a la rectoría. Muy pronto vamos a quitar los avisos, por favor estén atentos a ellos y anótense hoy para uno o dos de los ministerios. Muchas gracias.

GlobalFest is Saturday, May 17. Join us at St. Matthias Transfiguration School for a fun, family festival to celebrate the ethnic diversity of our community. Each class studies a country or state during the year and presents it with food, cultural information, music and dance at the festival.

GlobalFest Kick-Off Party

Join us for an adults-only GlobalFest Kick-Off Party, May 3, 7-9 pm at Ravenswood Pub, 5455 N. Ravenswood. Tickets are available in the school office, $20, or at the door, $25. The package includes two hours of beer, wine, soda and coffee and hors d’oeurves. Don’t miss it!

Did You Know - Morocco (5th Grade)

Morocco is the only African country that is not currently a member of the African Union.

Morocco was the first nation, in 1777, to recognize the fledgling United States as an independent nation.

The Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship stands as the United States’ oldest non-broken friendship treaty. (Signed by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, it has be in continuous effect since 1786.)

The cuisine of Morocco is a mix of Berber, Spanish, Corsican, Portuguese, Moorish, Middle

Eastern, Mediterranean and African cuisines.

Couscous is the most famous Moroccan dish along with pastille, tajine, and harira. The most popular drink is green tea with mint. The tea is accompanied with hard sugar cones or lumps.

Help us create a fabulous Math Garden

The 8th Graders will be designing and planting a Math Garden in the four planter boxes at the south side of our school. We would love donations of plants, organic soil, and organic mulch. We also need loans of 25 pairs of gardening gloves and garden tools (large shovels, small shovels, etc). We will begin gardening during our math classes at the end of April. Please contact Mrs. Bernstein (mrs.bernstein@values4life.com) if you would like more information.

Lil’ Mustangs Summer Camp

Ages 3-6 are invited to be a part of our first Summer Camp, June 9—July 3. Open to all. Children will have a full-day of learning with Art, Music, Spanish and Physical Education offered each day. There will be one field trip per week. Half-day camp available for 3-4 year olds. For details, see www.values4life.com.

Girls on the Run - Sponsor a Girl

Girls on the Run educates and prepares girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Twenty (20) girls in grades 3-7 set a goal to run a 3.1 mile running event —and accomplish it. They are coached by Principal Sandria DeSapio and Fifth Grade Teacher Rebecca Hansen and practice two times a week. The cost of participating is $75 per girl. We invite you to sponsor a girl for $40. Please send your contribution to the school. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass

The Golden Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, September 7th at 2:30 pm at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State, Chicago. The Holbrook Counseling Center is pleased to announce that Ms. Linda Volino, LCSW, BCD will be providing therapy services at St. Matthias Parish. Ms. Volino is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. Young Adult Weekend Retreat

REACH OUT

Reach Out is getting ready for the Annual Anointing Mass on May 3, 2008, at 10:30 am in the School Hall. Anointing is for the elderly and those with a serious illness. Children are not included unless they are seriously ill. Box lunches will be provided.

CO-ED SUMMER SOFTBALL IS BACK!

Announcing Ravenswood Catholic Young Adults Ministry-RC YAM Softball League sign-ups are now being accepted! ALL ability levels are needed. Everyone plays and no one sits! We are a social and recreational league comprised of women & men from the Parishes of Lincoln Avenue: St. Matthias, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Alphonsus, St. Benedict’s, Queen of Angels and Transfiguration.

Opening day is June 2, 2008. Games will be played on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. & 7:30 p.m. at Winnemac Park . Players are required to be at least 21 years of age. Registration deadline is May 16, 2008, so please don’t delay! The registration fee is $50.00 and remaining money (after expenses) will be donated back to each parish. We had a blast last year and hope to see you this year! Are You a Young Shakespeare?

Do not suffer the slings and arrows of a secret gift. Absent thee from anonymity awhile and draw thy pen to write an essay.

The Ravenswood Catholic Young Adults, an organization of residents mostly in their 20s and 30s, is sponsoring an essay contest for high school students. All are eligible to participate who attend St. Benedict High School, attend one of the RCYA member-parishes or whose parent(s) are parishioner(s) in an RCYA memberparish (St. Benedict, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Matthias, Queen of Angels or Transfiguration of Our Lord).

Choose one of the following topics and compose a 250 - to 500-word essay:

1. “Have you had an unexpected change or conflict in your life recently? Describe what happened and how it affected you. Provide concrete detail. Were other people involved and who were they? What was the resolution, if any, and what other changes do you expect as you look to the future?”
2. “Name a person in your life—whether family member, friend, teacher, spiritual leader or someone else— who has had a big impact. How did this person influence you and why? Be specific. What is your assessment of how your relationship with him or her has changed, if at all? Do you expect a difference in your future because of him or her and why?”

E-mail your essay in a Word document—with .doc appendix to rcya_chicago@yahoo.com. Include your name, phone number and affiliation (whether you are student at St. Benedict High School or what parish you or your parent(s) belong to). Entries will be judged by Craig Barner, an RCYA member and veteran journalist; John Schmitz, also an RCYA member and Chicago Public High School teacher and freelance writer; and Fr. Terry Keehan, pastor of St. Matthias. The decision of the judges is final.
