To the Great People of St. Matthias and Transfiguration,
We celebrate Catechetical Sunday this weekend. This is an opportunity for us as a community to acknowledge those who teach in St. Matthias Transfiguration School, Our CCD program, SPRED and Children’s Liturgy of the Word (during 9:30 Mass at BOTH parishes, 11 am Mass at Trans and soon during 11:30 Mass at Matthias). Teaching is one of the most important missions of the Catholic Church because it was one of Jesus’ most important ministries. Thanks to all who instruct young learners in the ways of our faith. A special thanks to Sandria DeSapio and Karyn McGovern who lead these programs.
I want to thank all who were instrumental in making the celebrations for Our Lady of Penafrancia so prayerful and beautiful this past week. In a special way I wish to say Mabalos-Thank you- to Roger Odiamar and the Confraternity of Our Lady of Penafrancia. Also Salamat to Elizabeth Ledesma, Nestor Espiritu and many others at Transfiguration for hosting the beautiful image of Mary and the Novenas, Masses and Rosaries during the days leading up to the feast. We have been asked by Cardinal George to collaborate between the two parishes and this celebration is a perfect example of how to do that. The Confraternity and several other donors paid for the restoration of the shrine area where the image is housed at St. Matthias. This area is also used as a Brides room at weddings. The roof has been repaired above the shrine, the walls have been repaired and painted and the floor has been cleaned. Salamat to all of you for your generosity.!!
St. Matthias is hosting the Ninth Annual Friends of the Grape Wine Festival on Sunday, October 5 beginning at 12:45. In past years we have referred to this event as a Wine Auction but we all know that it is much more than that. The event is a festival because it includes delicious food from over 20 neighborhood restaurants, a Beer Garden, over 150 Silent Auction items (mostly non-wine related) a Grape Expectations Raffle with $20 tickets, Live Entertainment and a Live Auction which includes trips, adventures and many priceless items. The Live Auction will have between 10-15 Lots, not 40 as in previous years. With fewer live auction items it will obviously take less time, but the items will be of much higher value. We are happy to have a professional Auctioneer with us this year who will lead the proceedings and this was one of the big suggestions of our committee this year and we are hoping that he will assist us with greater proceeds. Because the Live Auction items will have higher values we are suggesting that you go in with a group of friends and pool your finances and select a person from your group to do the bidding. This is called syndicated bidding. This is one way to participate in the event but there are several others including:
- Be sure to attend the event-tickets available at either rectory
- Invite family and friends to attend, possibly hand them an invitation available at the table in the center aisle of church or at either rectory
- Purchase Raffle Tickets available at either rectory
- Take Raffle tickets and sell them to family and friends
- Volunteer for the event –forms also available on the table in the center aisle of church or either rectory
- Spread the word about the event
- Donate items to the live or silent auctions
- Donate a bottle of wine that has special meaning to you and tell us why it is special
I am encouraging ALL parishioners of St. Matthias to participate in the Friends of the Grape as it is our major fundraiser. We need this event to be as successful as possible to meet our financial goals.
Interested in becoming Catholic? Know someone who is? RCIA is for adults interested in becoming Catholic. Sessions are on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm. Our next session is this Tuesday, September 30, a BBQ on the lawn of St. Matthias rectory with parishioners who have gone through the program recently. Please call ether rectory for details.
CCD Began last weekend. CCD is for all students from grades 1-8 who do not attend Catholic school. We also have some high School students who are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Saturday’s session starts at 9 am and Sundays at 10:45. Both are held at St. Matthias Transfiguration School, 4920 N. Claremont (just across Claremont from the Church). A La Gente Maravillosa de San Matías y Transfiguración,
Esta semana celebramos el domingo de Catequesis. Esta es una oportunidad para que reconozcamos a los que enseñan en la escuela de San Matías Transfiguración, en nuestro programa de CCD, SPRED, la Liturgia de los Niños (durante la Misa de las 9:30 en AMBAS parroquias, a las 11 AM en Transfiguración, y muy pronto durante la Misa de las 11:30 AM en San Matías). Enseñar es una de las misiones más importantes de la Iglesia Católica porque era uno de los ministerios más importantes de Jesús. Gracias a todos los que enseñan con fe a nuestros jóvenes. Un agradecimiento especial a Sandria DeSapio y a Karyn McGovern que nos guían en estos programas.
Quiero agradecerle a todos los que fueron instrumentales en hacer que las celebraciones de Nuestra Señora de Penafrancia fuesen de mucha oración. Muy en especial quiero decir Mabalos- Gracias- a Roger Odiamar y a la Confraternidad de Nuestra Señora de Penafrancia. También Gracias a Elizabeth Ledesma, Nestor Espiritu y muchas personas más de Transfiguración por tener la imagen bella de la Virgen y las Novenas, Misas y Rosarios durante los días anteriores de la fiesta. El Cardenal nos ha pedido que colaboremos juntos entre las dos parroquias y esta celebración es un ejemplo perfecto de cómo lo hacemos. La Confraternidad y muchos donantes mas pagaron por la restauración del santuario en San Matías donde esta la imagen. El área también se usa como cuarto de novias durante el día de su boda. El techo encima del santuario ha sido reparado, las paredes han sido reparadas y pintadas, y el piso se limpio. Gracias a todos por su generosidad!!!
San Matías tendrá el Noveno Festival de Vino Anual de los Amigos de Uva el domingo, 5 de octubre empezando a las 12:45. En los años pasados nos hemos referido a este evento como una Subasta de Vino, pero todos sabemos que eso es mucho mas que una subasta. Este evento es un festival porque incluye comida deliciosa de 20 restaurantes del vecindario, un Jardín de Cerveza, y mas de 150 artículos (no de vino) para la Subasta en Silencio, una Rifa de Expectación de Uva con boletos a $20, Entretenimiento en Vivo, y una Subasta en Vivo que incluye viajes, aventuras, y muchos mas artículos. La Subasta en Vivo tendrá 10-15 Lotes, no 40 como en años pasados. Con menos artículos para la subasta en vivo obviamente tomara menos tiempo, pero los artículos serán de mayor valor. Estamos orgullosos en tener un Subastador profesional que nos va a dirigir con los procedimientos y esto fue una de las sugerencias mas grandes de nuestro comité y esperamos que el nos ayude a recaudar mas. Porque los artículos de la Subasta en Vivo serán de mayor valor, les sugerimos que formen una asociación con sus amigos para que unan su dinero y elijan una persona del grupo para que sea la voz en la subasta. Esto es un modo de participar en el evento, pero hay otros modos incluyendo:
- Asistir al evento, los boletos están disponibles en ambas rectorías
- Invitar a familiares y amigos, posiblemente darles una invitación disponible en la mesa del centro de la iglesia o en cualquiera de las dos rectorías
- Comprar Boletos de Rifa disponibles en ambas rectorías
- Llevar Boletos de Rifa y venderlos a familiares y amigos
- Ser voluntario para el evento – los formularios también están disponibles en la mesa del centro de la iglesia o en cualquiera de las dos rectorías
- Decirle a todo el mundo sobre el evento
- Donar artículos para las subastas en silencio y en vivo
- Donar una botella de vino que tiene significado especial para usted y decirnos porque es especial.
Les sugiero a TODOS los feligreses de San Matías que participen en Los Amigos de Uva, porque es donde mas recaudamos fondos. Necesitamos que este evento sea un gran éxito para llegar a nuestras metas financieras.

Nuestra próxima sesión será el martes, 30 de septiembre en el césped de la rectoría de San Matías en un asado con los feligreses que recientemente completaron el programa. CCD empezó la semana pasada. CCD es para todos los estudiantes de 1ro a 8vo grado que no van a una escuela Católica. También tenemos algunos estudiantes de secundaria que están preparando para el Sacramento de Confirmación. Las sesiones de los sábados empiezan a las 9 AM y las de los domingos a las 10:45 AM.
